| Interview with Tiffany Clay |

Were you surprised to learn that your article, "A Call to Order: Law, Violence, and the Development of Montana's Early Stockman's Organizations, in Montana The Magazine of Western History, was chosen as Best Article on Wild West History by the WWHA?
Yes, I was very surprised --- and humbled by the honor. I am very appreciative of the Association thinking that the article was worthy of such an honor.
Why did you choose to research and write this article?
My work on Montana cattlemen's associations started as a result of the great resources Yale University, where I was studying when I undertook my research, has on western history. The University was also very generous in providing me funding to conduct archival research at the Montana Historical Society, as well as to fund me working on a cattle ranch for a few weeks. The later was a critical component of my research, as it provided me critical perspective on what it is like to be a rancher and some of the issues they have faced throughout the history of their industry. On a personal note, the research was fulfilling, as my great-great grandfather had been a big Wyoming rancher and head of the cattlemen's association there.
How long was this project from start to finish?
I spent about 9 months researching and writing the article. When it came to publishing the piece, I spent about 2 months working with the amazing and talented staff at Montana Magazine to tighten the article. The Magazine has a wonderful staff who makes the publication process very easy. I am very grateful for all their help.
Do you expect to do further research/writing about western history?
Yes, I would very much like to.
What suggestions can you offer for others who want to write for publication?
Find people in your life who can give you critical feedback on your writing.
