Dakota Livesay receives Cowboy Keeper Award

On December 5, 2009, Dakota Livesay was presented with the National Day of the Cowboy's 2009 Cowboy Keeper Award at the Single Action Shooters Society's National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Cowboy Keeper Award is bestowed upon individuals and organizations that make a substantial contribution to the preservation of America's pioneer heritage and cowboy culture. The award was conceived in support of the organization's mission to increase awareness of the Day of the Cowboy; a day of heritage celebration proclaimed by Congress, state legislatures, and governors each July since 2005.

Arizonan Dakota Livesay, publisher, historian, writer, western promoter extraordinaire and on-air personality, is aptly described by some as "a one-man Old West reality show."

Among his endeavors and accomplishments, Dakota publishes Chronicle of the Old West, a monthly newspaper comprised of actual 1800s newspaper articles, which he developed in an effort to teach people about the real cowboys versus the "reel" cowboys. A syndicated radio show of the same name grew from that format. Five days a week, Dakota tells stories about people and events from the Old West on 140 radio stations. He also has a 60 station, one-hour weekly show, interviewing those who are deeply involved in the preservation of pioneer heritage.

Dakota was the first to get behind the NDOC in its effort to support the Desert Cowboys, a group of American cowboy soldiers, while they were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

But, not satisfied with history alone, he formed "Living the Code Foundation," to encourage others to embrace precepts that made it possible to succeed on the frontier.

"No other country has had an era similar to the one we had with the Old West," says Dakota. "The Pilgrims came here about 400 years ago; for 300 of those 400 years, we've had a frontier, and it's our frontiers that have made us the great nation that we are today."
