Doc Shores
(November 11, 1844 - October 12, 1934)
This is one lawman who should be better known. Doc Shores chased more criminals and tracked more outlaws than anyone.
He is best known for his capture of the cannibal, Alferd Packer (the name is Alferd not Alfred).
Like many westerners, Doc worked at many professions (i.e. freighter/bullwacker, cowboy, etc.) before settling in Gunnison, Colorado as the county sheriff. Later he would become a deputy U.S. Marshal, a railroad detective and the chief of police for Salt Lake City, Utah.
It was Doc's keen sense of people and Sherlock Holmes ability that made him effective.
His real name was Cyrus Wells Shores. He obtained the moniker 'Doc' because he was named after the doctor who delivered him.
Doc Shores is buried in the Gunnison Cemetery just east of Gunnison, Colorado.
